Eye Care In The `ozone Crisis'

The Age

Monday December 6, 1993

from Hugh R. Taylor, professor of ophthalmology, University of Melbourne The `Age' is to be congratulated for its excellent review of the ``Ozone Crisis" (24/11). It gave a realistic review of the technical concepts of this important public health issue, although it did not say what these really meant for people. What should we do to protect ourselves? With the ``Sunsmart" campaign the Anti-Cancer Council and others have done a superb job alerting the Australian public to the dangers of UV exposure. Part of this message is to wear hats and sunglasses to protect one's eyes. This message often gets distorted to say that everyone, including children, needs to wear sunglasses all the time.

The real message is, where possible, to avoid exposure of the eyes to the sun, that is UV-B exposure. This means you should try to stay out of the sun in the middle of the day. If you have to go outside, then protect your eyes with a hat and sunglasses.

Hugh R. Taylor, East Melbourne.
